Ecotourism Principles
What is Ecotourism?
“Travel to natural areas that fosters environmental understanding, appreciation and conservation, and sustains the culture and well being of local people.” (Young & Goudberg 1992)
Ecotourism Principles
- It must promote positive environmental ethics fostering preferred behaviours in its participants.
- It must benefit the wildlife and the environment.
- It has a first hand experience with the natural environment.
- It has an expectation of gratification that is measured in terms of education and/or appreciation rather than in thrill seeking or physical achievement.
- It has a high cognitive and effective experiential dimension.
- It is more a philosophy as to how to do business than a type of business!
- It is values, ethics and the desire to have sustainable tourism.
